The short answer

Evaluate relevance by asking whether the response directly advances the user’s stated task under its constraints. Separate directness, coverage, and unnecessary content from factual support. An on-topic answer can still be false, while a factually correct response can be irrelevant to the requested decision.

What to take away

  • Judge the requested decision, not keyword overlap.
  • Treat relevant but false answers as separate failures.
  • Include precise clarification as a valid task response.

Keep relevance distinct from truth

Ragas explicitly distinguishes response relevance from factual accuracy. That distinction is useful when designing an application rubric: a score for matching the user’s intent should not be described as proof that the answer’s claims are supported.

Write the user’s intended decision or action in one sentence and retain the constraints that make it specific. A request for a next step is not satisfied merely by a broad definition of the topic. A request limited to supplied evidence is not helped by a long answer drawn from unverified general knowledge.

Use task-aware relevance anchors

Define direct, partially responsive, and off-task outcomes with examples from the product. Check whether the answer addresses the actual entity, time period, requested format, and action scope. Separate an optional explanation from a distraction that prevents the user finding the answer.

Do not reward exact keyword repetition. A useful answer can paraphrase the question, and a response can repeat all its nouns without solving the task. If a question is ambiguous, a precise clarification can be more relevant than a confident answer to one unspoken interpretation.

Create contrasts that separate relevance and support

For an illustrative question asking how to inspect a failed invoice extraction, a history of machine learning is off-task even if accurate. A concise checklist naming the source page, field mapping, and error record is relevant. If that checklist invents a nonexistent tool command, it still fails a separate support or correctness check.

Include an answer that discusses the right domain but ignores a required constraint. For example, a response recommending a new upload when the user asked to diagnose the existing record may be partially relevant but operationally unsuitable. The reference should explain the missing connection to the task.

Report relevance with the other acceptance criteria

Compare candidate outputs using the same intent anchors and preserve reviewer reasons. If an automated judge is used, validate whether it confuses length, keywords, or confident tone with responsiveness. Retain a sample of concise successful answers as controls.

Keep relevance, completeness, factual support, and task completion visible in the decision record. An improved relevance average cannot cancel a new unsupported claim or a required omission. Use off-task error categories to decide whether the product needs better instruction parsing, clarification, context selection, or answer organization.

Limits of the evidence

The invoice-debug contrasts are invented examples. No relevance metric was run or compared. Intent interpretation can be ambiguous, and a relevance score alone cannot establish factual support, complete coverage, or successful task execution.

Common questions

Can a clarification be a relevant answer?

Yes, when it resolves an ambiguity necessary to complete the requested task. Assess whether the clarification is specific and needed.

Does relevance require a reference answer?

It requires a clear task interpretation and acceptance rule. A reference can help, but exact reference wording should not be the only permitted response.
